What is Evolution?

The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has a myriad of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist student who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that existing species evolve into different species in a gradual and predictable way.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind the most evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific studies however, creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in schools. It is crucial that science educators advocate for teaching evolution. Unfortunately, in a few countries around the world there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made progress in some states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbook content on the evolution of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

While these are troubling developments, it is important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reason for this is many different reasons. Certain scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries such as developing new drugs and other treatments, while others use it to improve the quality of animal and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, and still others have a deep religious belief in God and are seeking to understand how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. While some creationists are not Christian however, many are. Creationists generally fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most well-known type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal, and that the universe and the life on Earth started only recently.

OECs may be less known However, their beliefs are as fierce like those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and they believe that evolution is an untruth.

Both types of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern science shunned miracles out of fear they could lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation. They consider their views to be "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." The theory says that God creates original species and then allows these to evolve over time. Eventually the evolutionary changes create new species that are identical to the original species.

Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things during a here single event, called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then gradually evolved. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.

In general, creationists oppose teaching evolution at schools. Numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and permit both evolution and creationism to be included in their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high school textbooks announced recently that they will remove the mention of evolution in their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this campaign. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution too.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and members. Its goal is to weed out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of trainee biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The causes are not certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its lectures and seminar events. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of them was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. This led to an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught to this day.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
